The scammy text might show a dollar amount for how much you supposedly owe and include a link that takes you to a page to enter your bank or credit card info \u2014 but it\u2019s a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams\">phishing scam<\/a>. Not only is the scammer trying to steal your money, but if you click the link, they could get your personal info (like\u00a0your driver\u2019s license number) \u2014 and even steal your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/what-know-about-identity-theft\">identity<\/a>,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The FTC recommends that you take the following steps if you get a suspicious text message:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t click on any links\u00a0<\/strong>in,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>or respond to, unexpected texts. Scammers want you to react quickly, but it\u2019s best to stop and check it out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check to see if the text is legit.<\/strong>\u00a0Reach out to the state\u2019s tolling agency using a phone number or website you know is real \u2014 not the info from the text.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Report and delete unwanted text messages.<\/strong>\u00a0Use your phone\u2019s \u201creport junk\u201d option to report unwanted texts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/how-recognize-and-report-spam-text-messages#report\">to your messaging app<\/a>\u00a0or forward them to\u00a07726 (SPAM).
