Cottingham, 26, of Sullivan, Ohio, was sentenced to 3 \u00bd years in prison followed by 2 \u00bd years of post-release supervision, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www4.erie.gov\/da\/press\/ohio-truck-driver-sentenced-firing-shots-another-tractor-trailer-thruway\">Erie County District Attorney\u2019s Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2024, Cottingham pleaded guilty to one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Class \u201cC\u201d violent felony) and one count of Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree (Class \u201cD\u201d felony).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cottingham was initially charged with Attempted Murder.<\/p>\n<p>The charges were issued following <a href=\"https:\/\/cdllife.com\/2024\/attempted-murder-charge-for-trucker-who-shot-at-second-semi-with-female-driver-sleeping-child-in-cab-new-york-cops-say\/\">an incident that occurred on July 29, 2024, on I-90 in the Town of Newstead<\/a>, New York.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say that Cottingham was behind the wheel of a semi truck when he fired multiple rounds into a second semi truck as both vehicles were westbound on I-90.<\/p>\n<p>The victim\u2019s truck was occupied by a female operator, a female passenger, and a 10-year female child who was asleep in the sleeper cab of the truck. None of the truck occupants were hurt, but New York State Police (NYSP) located one a bullet hole in the sleeper berth \u201cwithin a very close proximity of the sleeping child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Cottingham was located by NYSP shortly after the shooting incident, they discovered a loaded pistol in his vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the defendant had a licensed pistol permit in Ohio, he was not permitted to carry the handgun in New York State,\u201d the Erie County District Attorney\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/cdllife.com\/2025\/truck-driver-sentenced-to-prison-for-shooting-at-semi-truck-on-nys-thruway-with-female-driver-sleeping-child-inside\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A truck driver has been sentenced to prison following a shooting incident on the New York State Thruway in the summer of 2024.
