A Colorado lawmaker recently introduced legislation to require a qualified human driver to be present in self-driving commercial vehicles.<\/p>\n
On January 28, Colorado State Rep. Sheila Lieder introduced HB25-1122 (Automated Driving System Commercial Motor Vehicle<\/a>).<\/p>\n The bill would forbid the operation of an automated commercial vehicle \u201cunless an individual who holds a commercial driver\u2019s license (CDL) is in the vehicle, monitors the vehicle\u2019s driving, and intervenes, if necessary, to avoid illegal or unsafe driving.\u201d<\/p>\n The bill also establishes fines for companies that violate the CDL holder inside the cab requirement. The penalty for a first offense is $1000, and increases to $2000 for a second offense. The penalty doubles for each subsequent offense.<\/p>\n The bill has been assigned to the Assigned to Transportation, Housing & Local Government Committee for consideration.<\/p>\n Similar legislation has been introduced in recent years in states including California<\/a>, New York<\/a>, and Indiana.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
