{"id":18882,"date":"2025-02-21T05:37:37","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T05:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pro-truckdrivers.com\/blog\/70-la-port-drivers-on-strike-in-protest-of-pay-change-rising-health-insurance\/"},"modified":"2025-02-21T05:37:37","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T05:37:37","slug":"70-la-port-drivers-on-strike-in-protest-of-pay-change-rising-health-insurance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pro-truckdrivers.com\/blog\/70-la-port-drivers-on-strike-in-protest-of-pay-change-rising-health-insurance\/","title":{"rendered":"70+ LA port drivers on strike in protest of pay change, rising health insurance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_84\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<p>More than 70 Port of Los Angeles truck drivers on strike demonstrated Thursday in protest of changes in pay and rising health insurance costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Southern Counties Express drivers on strike gathered outside the Compton area truck depot in California at around 5 a.m. on Thursday, February 20th to demand contract negotiations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey forced us to change our pay so, we were hourly and now we\u2019re pay-per-load,\u201d participating truck driver Jocelyn said to <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/local-news\/port-of-l-a-truck-drivers-on-strike-over-pay-health-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KTLA<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re increasing our health insurance from $30 a week, for me, a family of three, to give or take $180 a week.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jocelyn and the other drivers say that the pay change was not in their contracts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work out of the ports \u2026 We used to get about $31 per hour and now we\u2019re getting paid per load, some of the rates are about $20 depending on location,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cdllife.com\/2025\/91-year-old-company-rebrands-hires-former-jack-cooper-yellow-leadership-after-being-sold-by-dhl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trucking company<\/a> released the following statement regarding the demonstration:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Southern Counties Express is disappointed in the union\u2019s decision to strike. The company has explained its financial hardships to the union and the union ignored our pleas for help. The company has enacted its best offer, which included several items requested from the union.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Under the company\u2019s offer, many drivers are receiving higher pay. And those who do not like the offer have the option to take a voluntary buyout.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Southern Counties Express will do everything in its power to protect our customers and the job security of our team members.
