You can ask the clerk if it’s free or not. I did a few times until I got some signal from them they thought it was a stupid question at several places. In most places the truck stop microwave is free to use. In some places in CA I overheard the clerk/owner? telling a customer he needed to pay to use the microwave. At one truck stop, I think it was the Sumner, WA Shell truck stop I think they had a sign indicating the cost of using the truck stop. Many are neglected, some are clean. I would suggest you both put any food into a container with a cover before using it or at least use a PAPER bag with your food inside it and the end closed to no add to the chemistry experiment in the oven and keep the cooties off of your food. You can use the cheapest PAPER plates that come in a stack of 100 or more, the really flimsy paper ones, not the study one with designs on them as a bottom “plate” and a top cover, or for something like a burrito, put the burrito on the paper plate, squeeze or roll the paper plate with the food inside and slide that into a paper bag you brought from the truck.
Remember, you don’t know if that particular microwave is under-powered, over-powered, or nuclear-powered so be careful. I would advise you buy something in the truck stop as appreciation they have it for you to use.
