Advice for a potential immigrant trucker | TruckersReport.com Trucking Forum

Hi all,

appreciate the title might invoke some emotions given Humboldt and other instances of arrogant immigrants causing tragedy and devastation but please hear me out.

been driving trucks in the UK since last summer and love it. Big thing though, is I don’t love the UK. I’ve always had ambitions to go to Canada and try to get PR. Figured I’d be much better getting a year + experience here before I went out.

I appreciate that Canada has a huge cost of living crisis, shortage of housing and a lot of other issues, sadly so does the UK. Just looking for general advice for if I do get over (2 year temp visa waiting in the wings).

I’m the right side of 30, no kids and no attachments, currently work hauling grain and gravel in a tramping job (UK equivalent of OTR) and I actually quite like it and don’t mind sleeping in the truck. There isn’t much in the way of services/truck stops in the areas I operate so used to sleeping in areas without toilets or amenities etc.

The likes of Toronto or Vancouver don’t really appeal to me, prefer more rural surroundings. Had eyed Saskatchewan, Alberta as first picks but would be grateful to get a start in any province.

im prepared for some backlash as I know given Trudeaus policy of letting in millions of immigrants and crashing the economy will have pissed a lot of people of but please understand I’d be a respectful immigrant. Not some lazy #### who thinks Canada owes him anything or that driving trucks is easy or that it’s acceptable to watch movies on your phone as you drive down the highway. I take my job seriously and have the basics in respect in decency, which from what I understand isn’t the case for a lot of new immigrants.

thanks in advance.
