CHP issues warning about California’s strict alcohol laws for CDL drivers

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued a reminder that driving under the influence of alcohol is a no-go for CDL drivers.

On Friday, December 27, CHP issued a notice to the trucking community about alcohol use after a commercial vehicle driver’s arrest.

From CHP:

Attention California Commercial Vehicle Drivers

A commercial vehicle driver was recently arrested in CHP – South Sacramento for DUI, underscoring the importance of following California’s strict DUI laws for CDL holders.

  • Lower BAC Limit: For commercial drivers, the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit is 0.04%—half the limit for non-commercial drivers.
  • License Suspension: A DUI conviction while operating a commercial vehicle can lead to the immediate suspension of your commercial driver’s license (CDL), even for a first offense.
  • Limited Second Chances: A second DUI offense can result in a lifetime ban from holding a CDL in California.
  • Off-Duty Rules Apply: Even if you’re off-duty or driving your personal vehicle, a DUI conviction can still impact your CDL and jeopardize your livelihood.
